Caribé was born from a combination of our experiences.
As an American Studies student, Phoebe had always planned on spending a year studying and living in the USA. She made it happen. But it wasn’t what she had dreamed of. Soon after arriving there, it quickly became clear that disparities were rife, and they felt even more obvious than in the UK.
When Phoebe arrived back in London, both sisters felt it was time to play their part in the push for change.
We put our heads together to combine all of this passion, skill, and ambition.
And, with much determination, started creating Caribé.
It’s no secret that the beauty industry has long let down people of colour.
Whether it’s lack of representation, harmful ingredients, or a ‘one shade fits all’ approach, we all have horror stories of bad beauty experiences. They are far too common.
We could talk for hours about our horror stories. But, to save you the pain of reading through them all, we just want to share one.
Picture this:
You’re a person of colour going to your first ever Ascot. You’ve always wanted to go and are counting down the days.
But as the event gets closer, you picture the usual Ascot clientele – white, middle aged, privileged – and start to feel anxious about entering a space which has historically excluded you.
You want to feel confident, radiant, glowing, the way you did in Antigua last summer – connected to your culture, close to things you miss when you’re in the UK.
So, you walk to every beauty shop you can think of, chasing that Antigua feeling, but it’s nowhere to be seen.
In fact, forget about summer, there isn’t even a shade dark enough to give you your Autumn complexion.
That is a problem.
But it’s not all external. There are problems internally too.
We have lost count of the number of times we’ve been told the myth that people of colour don’t need SPF.
It’s dangerous and increasing our risk of skin cancer.
There must be a better solution.
That is why Caribé exists.
Our mission is to revolutionise the beauty industry, make space for people of colour, and create products that don’t just look good but feel it too.
Beauty for people of colour, by people of colour.
Products which include rather than exclude, protect your precious skin, and make you feel like you.
